Last February, I went to Biomnis for an installation and training of a complete SCA CASA system during three days (February 17th – 19th, 2014). Mr. Alexandre Cauchon, the technical Engineer from our French distributors (Nikon France), was also there to help me.

Biomnis is one of the most important analysis laboratories in France and has also some laboratories in other countries. The Medically assisted reproduction department has high tech systems and does a lot of research in human reproduction.

In this case we have installed a complete SCA system with the following components:

  • Nikon Ci microscope with 10x, 20x, 40x, 60x and 100x objectives.
  • Motorized stage Optiscan II from Prior.
  • Tokai hit warm stage with 4 slides holder.
  • Fluorescence system with the pE-100 from CoolLED
  • Two different Basler digital cameras: One Ace and one Aviator
  • HP computer with all the SCA modules available (motility, concentration, morphology, DNA fragmentation and vitality).

They also wanted to connect the SCA database to their LIS system: InfoFIV (from RDS). Therefore, all the patients and new sample information introduced into InfoFIV system, automatically appears in the SCA application. The analyst just selects the sample that wishes to analyze, and all the results are automatically transferred to InfoFIV, making it a very simple and easy process.

They needed two digital cameras because they desire to analyze the morphology with motorized stage, using the 60x objective and the aviator camera of higher resolution. With just one click, the system analyzes the entire slide, giving the complete information of head, acrosome, midpiece and tail of each analyzed sperm. They will use the standard digital camera to analyze motility, concentration, DNA fragmentation and vitality with the highest precision.

For them is very important to be an accredited laboratory, which is very easy to attain with the SCA. All documents needed: installation certificate, training diploma as well as detailed instructions for use are provided together with the certificates of the components and disposables.

They were three intensive training days. I would like to express my gratitude to Dr. André Force and Dr Mélanie Badiou for their time and Mr Alexander Cauchon for his efforts. I hope they will use the SCA every day which I am sure will simplify their work.
